Coalescent (Texanol equivalent) is a highly efficient ester-alcohol additive for water-based latex paints. Its main task is to temporarily plasticize the polymer particles of the binder, allowing them to fuse into a continuous, strong film even at low ambient temperatures. The coalescent lowers the Minimum Film Formation Temperature (MFFT), enabling painting work in cooler conditions. After film formation, it slowly evaporates, leaving the coating hard, water-resistant, and scrub-resistant. The product has low volatility, mild odor, and hydrolytic stability (can be used in alkaline paints). It is the industry standard for high-quality acrylic, styrene-acrylic, and vinyl acetate paints.
