Sodium Tripolyphosphate (STPP) is a white free-flowing powder, the salt of tripolyphosphoric acid. It is traditionally a key component ('builder') in synthetic detergents and washing powders. Its main task is water softening by sequestering calcium and magnesium ions, allowing surfactants to work most effectively. Furthermore, STPP possesses dispersing properties, keeping dirt in suspension and preventing it from redepositing on fabric (anti-redeposition). It has an alkaline buffering action, aiding in grease breakdown. In the ceramic and paint industries, it is used as a powerful deflocculant for thick slurries, reducing the viscosity of slips and pastes. Also used in water treatment to prevent corrosion and scaling.
